SITUATION AND DESCRIPTION
Malborough is a popular village
with a small supermarket/filling station, two public houses an Anglican
Church (as well as our Baptist Church) and a primary school. It lies
just inland from the beautiful National Trust coast with its spectacular
cliffs, coves and beaches. Salcombe is situated close by with its
picturesque estuary renowned for its sailing and sandy beaches. At the
head of the estuary Kingsbridge provides a comprehensive range of shops
and other facilities.
HISTORY
The first
Baptist services were held in the village were held in a house owned by
Thomas Luckham from about 1800. In 1814 the site of the present chapel
was purchased and was opened in 1815. The church was linked with
Kingsbridge Baptist Church up to 28th March 1839. After that
date the church worshipped as a separate fellowship and appointed its
first minister in 1839.
On 26th and 28th September 1872
special services were held to celebrate the re-opening of the chapel
after certain alterations and the completion of the new Sunday school
premises.
PLACE OF WORSHIP
The building consists of the main chapel with a gallery
and a two-story extension at the side of the main building.
MEMBERSHIP
The Church
has a small but loving fellowship consisting of 35 people, 20 of whom
are members of the Church. The fellowship consists of a group of young
families but most of the congregation are 60 plus. There is a small but
loyal group of 8 children who attend on a regular basis. We are
fortunate to have a number of very skilled Sunday school teachers who
work extremely hard to teach the children with imagination and
enthusiasm.
ACTIVITIES
The Church gathers together on a Sunday morning for
worship at 10.30 a.m. The Junior Church
meets with the congregation for the first half of the service and leaves
for its own activities.
A Bible Study/Prayer meeting is held every Thursday (7pm
in Summer, 2.30pm in Winter). Every second Tuesday morning of the
month there is a ‘drop in’ coffee
morning between 9.30 a. m. and 11.00 am.
